The GEAR UP program at Monroe County High School is an initiative provided through the U.S. Department of Education. GEAR UP stands for “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.” This initiative provides services directly to students including academic advising, life skills training, summer enrichment programs, mentoring, career exploration, college tours, and help understanding the process for applying for college and financial aid. GEAR UP also offers services, information, and activities to family members and guardians, so that they can become more involved in their student’s education and in helping them prepare to succeed in college. GEAR UP Kentucky has two College and Career Advisors, Darrell Doerhoff and Marika Hamilton, that are working at Monroe County High School to assist both students in grades 10-12 and their parents/guardians. The GEAR UP website at http://gearupky.org/ has additional information.
When a MCSD@HOME day is used due to inclement weather, students and/or parents/guardians, especially seniors, are encouraged to contact Darrell or Marika for assistance with various topics such as FAFSA, college applications, scholarship applications, ACT on-line prep coursework, ILP’s, and resume completions.
